Langree Residence

Understanding Client
Designing a single family residence for Louis Langree, a conductor and his wife Aimee Clark Langree, a writer, becomes a chance to introduce architectural elements corresponding with their creative lifestyles. The primary living space is designed as a studio, ever-changing and capable of providing usage for music and entertaining at all scales. Furnishings and material finishes reflect the family's French heritage. The residence is located in Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, the city in which Louis performs.

Modeling became the primary medium for representation. Comprehensive design concept and and material were able to be shown in the limited site constraints by leaving off party walls on either side of the row house. The skylights distribute light throughout the vertical circulation space and bleed into individual rooms. A singular tree in the courtyard is placed to help perceive scale. The tree may be seen from multiple angles throughout the house. The entry stairs have a reveal to enhance light and shadow. The white wash walls exude a minimalist nature contrasted with the stone datum wall holding a heavier visual weight to imply its importance in defining programmatic transitions.
